Idiot’s Grace Winery is a family-owned and operated winery in the Columbia Gorge AVA of Washington and Oregon. Named after the owners’ beloved donkey, Idiot’s Grace offers a beautiful and rustic setting for wine tasting and events. The winery specializes in small-batch, handcrafted wines that showcase the unique terroir of the region. From crisp whites like Pinot Gris to full-bodied reds like Syrah, the wines offer a balanced and complex flavor profile. Visitors can also enjoy a selection of farm-fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, and charcuterie while taking in the stunning views of the surrounding orchards and vineyards. Overall, Idiot’s Grace Winery offers a unique and intimate wine tasting experience that highlights the beauty and bounty of the Columbia Gorge.

We employ oak sparingly and seek “freshness” by avoiding over-extraction. Our wines are typically lower in alcohol because we can harvest before sugars reach unnecessarily high levels. All of these efforts combine to produce “bright” and refreshing wines designed to complement the food at your table. We seek to honor the “old-world” traditions of winemaking.

Led by Vineyardist/Cellarmaster Brian McCormick, our small team believes in stewardship of the land in our vineyards, which are located on both the Oregon (Mosier) and Washington (Lyle) banks of the Columbia River – all within a National Scenic Area.

Mosier Creek Falls is a stunning waterfall located in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area near the town of Mosier, Oregon. The falls drop about 30 ft into a small pool and are surrounded by lush vegetation and moss-covered rocks. Visitors can access Mosier Creek Falls via a short trail that leads from the nearby parking area

Mosier Plateau is a nearby hiking trail that offers stunning views of the Columbia River Gorge and the surrounding mountains. The trailhead is located just east of Mosier and the trail meanders through a mix of grasslands, oak trees, and basalt cliffs. Hikers can choose to take a shorter loop or a longer 7-mile loop that includes a side trip to Mosier Creek Falls. Along the way, hikers can spot various forms of wildlife, including deer and a variety of birds.

Trail Notes

Begin the hike in town, at the 30-foot cedar totem pole. Its wildlife motifs were carved by lifelong Gorge resident Jeff Stewart, an art instructor at Columbia Gorge Community College in The Dalles.

Turn left to walk east a short way, on the highway shoulder. Grab some drinks and snacks at the market, then continue east on the highway. Cross over Mosier Creek on a bridge designed in 1920 by the famous Oregon bridge engineer Conde McCullough, and restored in 2017. Mosier Creek and the town take their names from Jonah Mosier, who built a sawmill at the mouth of Mosier Creek in the 1850s.

Just beyond the bridge, turn right onto a hiking trail into Mosier Pocket Park. Follow the trail along Mosier Creek past the Mosier Pioneer Cemetery, with graves from as early as the 1860s. Come to a viewpoint overlooking the canyon and upriver to Mosier Creek Falls. Continue through oak groves to the top of the waterfall. The horsetail-shaped falls drop 80 feet in two drops. Picnic here or swim in the swimming hole between the two cascades.

Please always stay on the trail and clean your boots before and after you hike. Hikers are a common vector for spreading invasive seeds.

Restrooms can be found in downtown.

Silver Falls, Trail of the Ten Waterfalls.

About the Hike: The popular trail through Silver Falls State Park’s forested canyons visits 10 spectacular waterfalls, five more than 100 feet high. The path even leads through mossy caverns behind the falls’ shimmering silver curtains. This loop is suitable for families with beginning hikers because side trails provide shortcuts back to the car. Dogs are not allowed on the trail.

Difficulty: The full loop to see all 10 waterfalls (from South Falls to North Falls) is a moderate hike of 6.9 miles, gaining 700 feet of elevation, but the recommended shortcut (omitting Twin and North Falls) trims the loop to 5.1 miles. For a shorter, 2.8-mile loop, turn back after Lower South Falls. For an even shorter 0.7-mile tour, simply loop to the bridge at the base of South Falls.

Hiking Tips: From the South Falls Picnic Area C parking lot, follow a broad path downstream a few hundred yards to historic Silver Falls Lodge, built by Civilian Conservation Corps crews in 1940. After inspecting this rustic stone-and-log building, continue a few hundred yards to an overlook of 177-foot South Falls. From here take a paved trail to the right. Then switchback down into the canyon and behind South Falls.

A few hundred yards beyond South Falls is a junction at a scenic footbridge. Don’t cross the bridge unless you’re truly tired, because that route merely returns to the car. Instead take the unpaved path along the creek. This path eventually switchbacks down and behind Lower South Falls’ broad, 93-foot cascade.

Beyond Lower South Falls the trail forks again. If you’re wearing down, you can turn right and climb the steepish ridge trail to the canyon rim and parking lot, for a total trip length of 2.8 miles.

If you’re ready for a longer hike continue straight, heading up the north fork of Silver Creek to 30-foot Lower North Falls. At a footbridge just above the falls, take a 250-yard side trail to admire tall, thin Double Falls. Then continue on the main trail past Drake and Middle North Falls to the Winter Falls trail junction.

At this point, turn right for the recommended 5.1-mile loop. This path climbs to a parking area above Winter Falls. From there, keep right on a 1.6-mile return trail through the woods to the South Falls area, the lodge, and your car.

Lyle Cherry Orchard – Columbia Gorge. This gem of a hike on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge offers spectacular views of the Columbia River. Also spring wildflowers, and Oregon White Oak woodlands. Owned by the Friends of the Columbia Gorge (FOG), the property is the centerpiece of their acquisitions and restoration. It is consistent with the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area Act of 1986. Originally an out and back trail, WTA volunteers worked with FOG staff to plan and construct two additional loops off of the main trail. The short eastern loop (Cherry Loop) takes a clockwise journey through a meadow that was once the site of the namesake Cherry Orchard. The last survivor from the cherry tree farm days appears at the far eastern end of the meadow and blooms in the spring.
